This year’s event was a hugh hit. The Chamber took on the taskof organizing the Parade for the 3rd time and continues the focus on community, school and sporting groups, under the theme of “Voyages of Discovery”.
It is very much a collaborative event between the Town Council and local business; at the launch in the Museum on the 1st March , Bill Tosh explained that any sort of parade required around €20,000 to stage and that Frank Pentony had agreed to contribute 50% and business through the efforts of the Chamber’s two Fionas, was contributing the other 50%.
Shelia O’Sullivan the Arts Officer had secured the renowned Galway street drama group to come and entertain on the streets before the parade along with jugglers, stilt-walkers and other acts. Chair of the committee Mark Dearey welcomed the many, many representatives from schools and youth clubs came to show their support for a parade which offered young Dundalkonians to show their national identity.
Noel Lennon and Jim Lennon, chairs of Town and County respectively, lent their good wishes for the day, Jim assured everybody he’d be thinking about them as he paraded in New York and Chris Brayden chair of Chamber joined in the support.
The parade started at the De La Salle Boys School in Philips Street @ 1pm and the review platform was in front of Ulster Bank on Clanbrassil Street. Being the Saturday some businesses in town elected to open. The Retail Park and The Marshes Shopping Centre were also open for business.
